The Portrait

2017

Nadia Fares

Based on the story of Marie Grosholtz

Madame Tussaud was born Marie Grosholtz in Strasbourg, France to a Swiss mother and a German father. When Marie was 19 years old, the French Royal family invited her to the palace to teach King Louis XVI’s younger sister the art of wax modeling.

Eight years later the French revolution broke out. Fed up with the Royals, French citizens wanted more equality. They captured Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, and sent them to the guillotine. Marie, because of her link with the royals was shaved in preparation for the guillotine as well. She saved her own head by agreeing to make wax death masks of the executed royals to “prove” that she was not loyal to them.
